Placement Information for Enrollment in Freshman/Sophomore Math Classes
|
Math Placement Coordinator,
David
Anton (C.A.M.P.) |
Almost
all students entering UW at the freshman or sophomore levels will be taking
mathematics courses as part of their graduation requirements. We want to take
this opportunity to acquaint you with the special procedures that are used to
check prerequisites for math courses prior to registration. Knowledge of these
policies in advance of registration will facilitate your enrollment in an appropriate
math class with a minimum of delay or disappointment.
All
UW math courses have carefully stated prerequisites which are detailed
below;
the Department of Mathematics considers adherence to these prerequisites essential
in assuring that each student has the best possible opportunity for academic
success. In accordance with this policy all students registering for a math
course will have their records checked in order to determine whether the prerequisite
is satisfied. A computerized prerequisite check is run approximately two
weeks prior to the start of the Fall and Spring semesters. Students who register
early for a math course but have not satisfied the prerequisites at the time
of the check will be automatically dropped from the course.

Prerequisites
May Be Satisfied in Any
of the Following Ways
- Passing
the Mathematics Placement Exam (MPE) at the appropriate level
(see below) within one year prior to the start of the
course. The MPE is administered on a regular basis. Contact the
Math
Department for test information and
dates.
Sample problems are available for review.
- Receiving
a sufficiently high ACT composite math score (see
below).
An SAT quantitative score of 600 or above is accepted in lieu of the
MPE for all courses up through Calculus 1 (MATH 2200) and Business Calculus
I (MATH 2350). ACT and SAT scores are valid for three years.
- Passing
a credit-level prerequisite course at UW or another college with a grade of
``C" or better. High school courses and out-of-state non-credit courses
are NOT considered as prerequisites.
ATTENTION TRANSFER STUDENTS:You are strongly urged to bring with you
a copy of your grade reports, a transcript, or a UW Transfer Evaluation form
in order to demonstrate your completion of an appropriate prerequisite at another
college. Having documents in hand during registration will facilitate enrollment
in your UW math course.
