Students must pass a qualifying examination at the master's level. This exam tests knowledge in the three core areas: algebra, analysis, and applied mathematics. Candidates for the master's degree must complete at least 30 hours of course work. Candidates must also obtain a grade of A or B in a set of seven specific courses. These are as follows: MATH 5200, 5230, 5400, 5405, 5500, 5550, and 5600. A master's thesis which may consist of some original work in mathematics (Plan A), or a survey paper (Plan B), is also required.
Ph.D. Degree
Master of Science in Teaching (MST)
The candidate should have completed a B.A. , B.S., or B.Ed. and the education requirements for secondary school teaching or hold a valid teaching certificate in any state. Within the baccalaureate degree, the following courses should have been taken: MATH 3000, 3550, 4000 or 4250, and 4600. Students who enter without these courses or their equivalents must take them, but they will not receive credit toward the M.S.T. degree for them. The candidate must have completed two years of teaching at the precollege level before the degree is awarded.
Candidates must complete at least 30 hours of course work, of which at least 18 hours must be mathematics courses at the 4000 level or above; at least 24 of the 30 hours must be in the College of Arts and Sciences. A 3.0 grade point average in mathematics courses is required. Specific courses which must be taken are Secondary School Mathematics (topology, matrices, number theory and transformational geometry). STAT 4010 is strongly recommended. COSC 1010 or 1020 is required if the equivalents have not been completed; COSC 4000 or equivalent may be substituted if taken prior to admission to the program. A Plan B paper is required, as is an oral examination which will cover the content of the paper.
