If your advisor has determined that you will need to satisfy one or both of the University Studies Quantitative Reasoning requirements (QA/QB), then you are in the right place. We recognize that off-campus students may face more challenges in meeting these requirements than traditional students. Hopefully the following options will be helpful in your effort to meet these requirements.

If you do not have an ACT math score from within the last three years, or if the ACT score does not meet the prerequisite, you will need to take a Math Placement Exam in order to enroll in a Correspondence Study course. UW uses either the ACT COMPASS exam or the College Board AccuPlacer exam (both are a computerized math placement exam). Check at your local college to see whether one of these tests is offered. Only the COMPASS or AccuPlacer exam will be acceptable to UW's Math Department. If you choose this option, the Placement Exam score report will have to be sent to UW's Math Department. Your course eligibility will be determined by your test score(s) as compared to the established cut-offs of UW's Math Department. Please send the Placement Exam score report to:

If your local college does not offer ACT's COMPASS exam or College Board’s AccuPlacer exam, you can take an online exam through UW's Math Department. In order to do this, you will need to arrange a proctor for the exam. Acceptable proctors should have some official connection to an educational institution, for example a high school or college instructor or counselor.  Other possibilities include Head Librarians, military Education Officers, or similar.  To take the placement exam in your local community, you need to do the following:

1. Contact a local college, university testing center or other potential testing site. The testing center will need a computer with internet access. Be sure the chosen proctor is willing to give a test lasting 1-2 hours.

2. Once you have located a site, send an email with the information below. This email will be automatically sent to our office and we will notify the proctor with the needed information for your placement test. You must also send a check for $15 to cover the cost of the online exam to the person and address listed above. You will be contacted when your check is received, and your proctor will be given the necessary information for the exam one to two days prior to the date you select.
