The Faculty Mentors

Greg Lyng

Greg grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana (the one-time magnet wire capital of the world) and received his BA from St. Olaf College and his Ph.D. from Indiana University. After a post-doc at the University of Michigan, he came to Wyoming in 2005. His mathematical interests mostly center around partial differential equations, and he has an abiding affection for all things calculus. In his spare time (is there such a thing?) Greg enjoys alpine skiing, trying to solve the New York Times crossword puzzle, drinking good coffee, and passionately following the fortunes of the Indiana University men's basketball team.

Hakima Bessaih

Hakima came to UW in 2004. Prior to that she taught for several years in Algeria and Italy. She earned her Ph.D. from the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, Italy. Her research interests include Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Stochastic Processes, and Stochastic Dynamical Systems. She is currently working on a project to model the highly swirling nature of turbulent fields such as tornadoes in the presence of random disturbances.

Dan Stanescu

Dan is a native of Romania, where he grew up and received an Aerospace Engineering degree. After working for a couple of years designing aircraft components he emigrated to Canada, where he spent ten years and got his Master's end PhD degrees. He then spent three years as a postdoctoral fellow at Florida State University. While there he developed, under a contract with NASA Langley, several computer programs for predicting the noise fields due to aircraft engines, in particular the large turbofan engines currently used on commercial airplanes. This required quite a bit of numerical analysis, a relatively recent field of mathematics which developed largely after the advent of digital computer. Next thing you know, Dan came to UW to use his expertise in this area by pushing further the computational science enterprise on campus, but even more importantly to follow his call for teaching.

Jeff Selden

Jeff grew up in southern New Mexico. He got a B.S. in Mathematics from New Mexico State University and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Arizona. He has had post-docs at the Erwin Schroedinger Institute in Vienna (Austria), the University of Birmingham (UK), and the University College London (UK). He has been at Wyoming since August of 2008.

The transition fromLondon to Laramie would have been a lot harder if it weren't for the fact that the outdoor life in Wyoming rocks. Roughly speaking, Jeff works in the area of mathematical physics (e.g., mathematical aspects of quantum mechanics), though he can be easily convinced to think about almost any interesting mathematical questions.
