Areas Discussed

Areas that have been discussed are:

  • Applications of Modern Algebra

  • A History of Mathematics

  • An Adventure in Problem Solving

  • Crypto-logical Mathematics

  • Discrete Mathematics

  • Linear Algebra and Matrix Theory

  • Mathematical Connections

  • Number Theory

  • Polynomials and the Theory of Equations

  • Probability

  • Transformational Geometry

  • The Underpinnings of Calculus

  • Topics in Discrete Mathematics

  • Topics in Finite Mathematics

All of the courses are designed with the secondary teacher of mathematics in mind. Every effort is made to fill in the necessary background for all the participants.

In Spring 2000 the NCTM issued a new document, Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, as part of an ongoing process of articulating, focusing, and improving mathematics education. Various topics were given new emphasis among which were mathematical connections and modeling. These recommendations formed the basis for Summer 2000, ‘Mathematical Connections’, and 2001, ‘Mathematical Modeling’. Summer 2002 concentrated on the text “Journey Through Genius: The Great Theorems of Mathematics” by Dr. William Dunham. Professor Dunham provided 150 problems to go with the text and also served as a guest speaker that summer.
