Career Opportunities for Math Majors

If you have arrived at this page it is likely you have started thinking about life after graduation. This is a good thing since it takes time to prepare for either graduate studies or applying for jobs. It is important you seek help from your advisor or the Center for Advising and Career Services regarding any one of the following: preparing for the GRE, applying to Graduate School, applying for special fellowships, getting letters of recommendation, opening a UW placement file, getting ready for UW on-campus recruitment opportunities, preparing a resume, finding potential employers.

Professor Dan Callon gave a talk last spring about who hires math majors (without grad degrees), why they would hire a math major versus some other major, and precisely what they look for in the applicant.  His summary posted at

Dr. Callon says there are four reasons employers prefer math majors:

  1. Math majors have quantitative skills that are  in demand in the social science areas ... and to better ones chances of entering these fields, a minor in journalism, sociology, economics or psychology is an asset.
  2. Math majors can draw conclusions from data ... businesses have lots of data, and they hire computer types to gather the data and then look elsewhere for people to synthesize it.
  3. Math majors have problem-solving skills that are attractive to employers who do project management and inventory management.
  4. Math majors have analytical and logical thinking skills.
