The Department of Mathematics is committed to
excellence in undergraduate and graduate education and research. Many of our
instructors have won university, national and international awards. Our
active research areas include mathematical and computational fluid
mechanics, computational number theory, computational linear algebra,
stochastic analysis, control theory, biological and geophysical modeling as
well as theoretical research in algebra-combinatorics, complex analysis and
nonlinear partial differential equations. The department maintains very
active externally funded interdisciplinary research collaborations with a
number of engineering departments including computer science, electrical
engineering and mechanical engineering. This collaboration is enhanced
through the Distinguished Lecture and Colloquia Series offered each academic
year. Both undergraduate and graduate students are invited to listen to both
nationally and world renowned guest lecturers on a weekly basis. The
Institute for Scientific Computation (ISC) and
the Wyoming Institute for Discrete Mathematics and Information Assurance (WIDMIA)
also provide frameworks for interdisciplinary research.
