The Putnam exam is a yearly mathematics competition sponsored
by the Mathematical Association of America, and taken by students all across
the U.S. and Canada. Last year, almost 3000 students from 453 colleges and universities
participated. This is a challenging exam, but it's fun if
you like this kind of thing. It can be frustrating
-- staring at a problem, trying various ideas -- but it's exciting if you figure
one out. Any undergraduate is eligible to participate
(to a maximum of four times). Every fall, the math department has a class,
Math 3800, intended to help students prepare for the Putnam exam. Students in
the class form the annual Putnam Team.
